These are the different database options available with AWS.
Relational Database Service ( RDS ): This service helps in easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database in the cloud. It is very cost effective, highly scalable, automated backup and DB administration task is also possible. Currently there are four database supported ( Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server). Another biggest advantage of using RDS is that it automatically patches the database and backs up your database, storing the backups for a retention period that you define and enabling point –in-time recovery. You can select an option known as “Multi-AZ” which enhance the availability and scalability of your mission critical database beyond one availability zone ( AZ).
RDS is the Relational Database Service. This allows Amazon to handle the database software for you (including licenses, replication, backups and more). You aren’t given access to any underlying EC2 servers and instead you simply connect to the database using your preferred method (e.g. JDBC). NB. currently this supports MySQL, Oracle, PostGreSQL and Microsoft SQL Slug.
DynamoDB: It is a fully-managed NoSQL database service, please read on “NoSQL” is you don’t know about it. This service used Solid State Drives (SSD) to store all its data and the data automatically replicated across multiple AZ for enhanced high availability and durability.
Elastic Cache: This service is a memcache compliant cache cluster on-demand, this service improves the performance of web applications by retrieving information from a fast, managed, in memory caching system, instead of relying disk or database which is slow. Elastic Cache supports two open source caching engine I.e. Redis and memcache. It is integrated with CloudWatch and SNS for monitoring, performance monitoring and alerts.
Redshift :It is a fast, fully managed, petabyte scale data warehouse service. It is very simple and cost effective solution which can be integrated to your existing BI tools to analyze your data. It supports Amazon VPC out of the box, you can also encrypt your data and backup is very simple to take via few clicks.
